Reframing Resettlement: Hope. Education. Dreams.
WUSC Student Refugee Photography Exhibition
This exhibition provides insight into the lives of five SRP students at VIU – who they are, who they hope to be, the significance of their involvement with the Student Refugee Program, and the context of the situation that led them to Canada. It aims to bring awareness to organizations like WUSC, and more broadly, bring attention to the Refugee Crisis occurring across the world.
In seeking to “reframe” the narrative around resettlement, student portraits were shown alongside a series of their written responses to create a snapshot of their identity. Images diverse in colour and expression celebrate their unique character, while written responses provide details into their story. One student’s poem speaks to her creativity as she reflects on the meaning of home and community.
Through this effort, we hope to offer new ways of seeing and understanding the concept of resettlement – illustrated through the faces and stories of SRP students. We seek to demonstrate that student refugees are not just defined by their struggles, but by their distinct individuality, their community, their skills and talents, their hopes and ambitions, and their dreams for the future.
